Travel guide

Travel Guide to Sapporo, Japan for First-Time Visitors

Welcome to Sapporo! Whether you're visiting for a conference or for leisure, this guide will help you make the most of your stay in Japan's northern capital. Known for its beautiful landscapes, world-class cuisine, and unique blend of modern and traditional Japanese culture, Sapporo has plenty to offer. Sapporo is also the home for the ICDES2025 conference.

1. Getting to Sapporo

Arrival at Narita International Airport (NRT)
Most international travelers flying to Japan will land at Narita International Airport, located about 60 km (37 miles) outside of central Tokyo. As your final destination is Hokkaido, you’ll likely need to transfer to a domestic flight from Narita to New Chitose Airport (CTS), the main airport serving Sapporo and the surrounding area.

New Chitose Airport (CTS), which is about 45 minutes from Sapporo by train. The JR Rapid Airport Line connects the airport to Sapporo Station every 15 minutes. Once at Sapporo Station, you'll find easy access to public transportation, hotels, and the conference venue.

Alternatively, you can take an airport limousine bus that stops at major hotels and central areas in Sapporo. Taxis are available but more expensive.

2. Public Transportation in Sapporo

Sapporo is well-connected by an efficient subway system, buses, and trams. The Sapporo Subway has three main lines: Namboku Line (green), Toho Line (blue), and Tozai Line (orange), making it easy to navigate the city. You can buy an IC card like Kitaca or SAPICA for convenient travel without needing to buy individual tickets.

For conference attendees, using the subway is the easiest way to get around. Taxis are reliable but a bit more expensive than public transport.

3. Must-Try Food

Sapporo is famous for its culinary delights, so don't miss out on these local specialties:

Sapporo Ramen:
Known for its rich, miso-based broth. Try the famous ramen at Ramen Alley in Susukino.
Jingisukan:
A Hokkaido specialty of grilled lamb.
Sapporo Beer:
Visit the Sapporo Beer Museum to try the local brew.
Seafood:
Being close to the ocean, Sapporo has some of the freshest seafood. Head to Nijo Market for fresh crab, sea urchin, and more.
4. Sightseeing in Sapporo

While attending your conference, you can squeeze in some sightseeing. Here are some top attractions:

Odori Park:
A long park in the center of the city, famous for its winter Sapporo Snow Festival and beautiful flower displays in spring and summer. Great for a lunchtime walk.
Sapporo TV Tower:
Located at the eastern end of Odori Park, it offers a great view of the city from its observation deck.
Hokkaido University:
Just a short walk from Sapporo Station, this beautiful campus is perfect for a peaceful stroll.
Moerenuma Park:
A large, modern park designed by artist Isamu Noguchi, with unique architecture and art installations.
Mt. Moiwa:
For panoramic views of Sapporo, take the Mt. Moiwa Ropeway. It's especially beautiful at sunset.
5. Cultural Etiquette
Greetings:
In Japan, bowing is the traditional way to greet someone, though a handshake is acceptable for foreigners.
Shoes:
Always remove your shoes when entering someone’s home or certain traditional establishments. Some restaurants and temples may require you to do the same.
Quiet on Public Transport:
Japanese people value quiet and respect in public spaces. Refrain from talking loudly on trains and buses.
Cash:
Although credit cards are increasingly accepted, Japan is still very much a cash-based society. Be sure to carry enough yen with you, especially for smaller shops and restaurants. You can withdraw cash from ATMs at convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Lawson.

We hope you enjoy your stay in Sapporo! Safe travels!
